Camp Site
Camp Pennyroyal is a beautiful woodland site located 15miles south
of Owensboro, Kentucky. The camp features a
brand new lodge, hiking trails,
and a peaceful eight-acre lake for swimming, canoeing, and kayaking. The swimming
area consists of a well-guarded crib (a shallow aluminum pool built into the
lake for safety), roped-off swimming area, diving board, and water slide. Pennyroyal
has a lodge for meals, a large arts and crafts shelter, a central shower house
for daily showers, a Health Center, and an amphitheatre for skits and
campfires.
Campers
Pennyroyal campers are entering grades one through nine. Lots of girls
come
to
Camp Pennyroyal for their first resident or "sleep away" camping
experiences. Many return to this camp home summer after summer.
Traditions
Opening and Closing Campfires The first and last nights of every
session are marked by campfires at the
Amphitheater, attended by the whole camp. Units present skits, songs, and sometimes lead special ceremonies.
Meals Meals at Girl Scout camp follow special traditions. Before
the meal, a unit will “hop” the tables, setting out all the plates, silverware,
napkins, and cold food. During the meal, the “hoppers” bring the hot foods
out to their tables. After the meal has been finished, we wash our own dishes
in “beaver buckets” before we put them
in the sanitizer. The best part is
that we sing the whole time we are washing dishes!
Flag Ceremony Before breakfast each morning, the flag is raised; and it is retired each evening before dinner. Units take turns leading the flag ceremonies throughout the session.
