Professional Development
The excellent training you'll receive for this job includes 10-14 days of pre-camp training. You will learn leadership skills, study child and adolescent development, and get certified in CPR and First Aid. You'll also practice your outdoor camping and boating skills and learn new program activities.
Camp counseling is excellent preparation for any career. You will improve your leadership style, people skills, organizational strategies, and problem-solving abilities. Because of the breadth of the job, employers in all kinds of fields recognize camp counseling on resumes as an outstanding experience. e can also help you arrange your camp job as an official internship or for college credit.
Build Lasting Friendships
The highlight of camp work? Forging strong friendships. You'll
live and work with 25 to 35 incredible staff members through a summer experience
like no other, and through it all, you'll become very close.
Our staff are mostly college students and young adults from diverse backgrounds. Many are studying or have degrees in education, recreation, or environmental science; some are in fields unrelated to camp. Their Girl Scouting, camping, boating, swimming and counseling experience is greatly varied. We hire staff from across the country and around the world.
From counselor newsletters and organized annual reunions to e-mail and
informal get-togethers, bonds built and memories made are maintained after
the summer's end. Many friends from Bear Creek and Pennyroyal stay in touch
for years—some even for decades.
International Camp Counselors
Each summer, we hire international staff who further enrich our programs by sharing their diverse cultures and experiences. Last summer, we had staff from England, Finland, Kazakhstan, Australia, Korea, Thailand, Scotland, and Mexico. We have a great time with our internationals and enjoyed learning more about their language, games, songs, food and customs. We look forward to another great international exchange in 2010!
